This can be both a strength and a weakness of the movie. The movie, on the other hand, has to condense a lot of this information into a shorter running time and therefore leaves out some of the details and background information. The book goes into much more depth about the world of Panem, the characters, and the events leading up to the Hunger Games. One of the main differences between the book and the movie is the level of detail. The Hunger Games is a way for the ruling Capitol to maintain control over the districts and punish them for their past rebellion. The story follows a young girl named Katniss Everdeen as she volunteers to participate in the Hunger Games, a brutal annual event in which one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts must fight to the death in a controlled arena. Both the book and the movie are set in a dystopian society called Panem, which is located in a future North America.
